Hurricane Isabel
Information contained in this report comes from viewing damage videos, as well as limited reports form eye witnesses. Hurricane Isabel caused more damage than would normally be expected for a category 2 hurricane, and over a larger area. Damage stretched from the North Carolina Outer Banks all the way to the northern Chesapeake Bay region. Storm surge flooding caused most of the damage in North Carolina. Many homes on the Outer Banks have been destroyed or heavily damaged due to the storm surge, and this has extended to the sounds. Heavy storm surge flooding occurred in Elizabeth City, located near the Virginia and North Carolina border, along with very heavy wind damage. On Hatteras Island, the tidal surge was so powerful that it created a new inlet, cutting off those who remained on the island during the height of the storm from the rest of the country. Further north, strong winds and storm surge caused damage to the Virginia Beach region. Numerous roofs were blown off of houses in the area. In addition, unprotected areas of coastline were flooded by the storm surge. Some of the worst of the flooding occurred in the Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore has suffered some its worst storm surge flooding ever, which had submerged much of the city. Other areas of the Bay were also flooded. As of the present time, there have been 17 confirmed deaths. Damage figures will be available after the season
