the first hurricane of the 1999 Atlantic hurricane season, took aim on southern Texas on August 22, 1999 as a category 4 hurricane with top winds of 140 mph. As Bret approached the Texas coast, forecasters feared Bret would strike in the highly populated cities of Brownsville or Corpus Christi, Texas but the storm actually came ashore in the sparsely populated Kenedy County in the early evening of August 22, 1999. After depositing nearly 25 inches of rain in some coastal locations, Bret weakened as it moved west over land. Bret was downgraded to a tropical storm on the morning of August 23 but continued to drop heavy rains across southern Texas.
